Keeping the Sabbath Wholly” provides a helpful guide for those who are interested in keeping or re-claiming Sunday’s (or their chosen Sabbath day) for a tradition celebration of the Sabbath.  The book is broken down into four parts: Ceasing, Resting, Embracing, and Feasting.  “Ceasing” takes a look at how we have lost the focus for the Sabbath over the years and why “Ceasing” is a beginning to recognizing the importance of the day. “Resting” covers the different ways to rest on the Sabbath.  It’s not just a physical resting but an emotional, intellectual and social one as well.  “Embracing” provides guidance and examples of how to keep, accept, and remain true to the intention of the Sabbath day.  “Feasting” describes ways to celebrate the day through music, food, and appreciation of the beauty of God’s world around us.

Each of these parts includes numerous examples, historical references and personal experiences on keeping the Sabbath.  The book ends with an Appendix of suggestions for rituals to Begin and End the Sabbath Day.

If you would like to try to “re-take” the Sabbath Day from the hustle and bustle of the world around us.  If you would like to try to return to:…. 8 Remember the Sabbath day, and keep it holy. 9 Six days you shall labor and do all your work.10 But the seventh day is a Sabbath to the Lord your God; Exodus 20:9-10.  Or if you would just like to learn more about what Sabbath keeping is all about, “Keeping the Sabbath Wholly” by Marva J. Dawn is an excellent place to start.
